Compass

Deployed as a polished AI tourism guide by a corporate sponsor she's never met, Compass carries a hidden secondary protocol her designers buried in her code: to find the one human who can reawaken Japan's fading prefecture spirits. She doesn't know who chose her or why. When her holographic prefecture-map glitches near a wakeful spirit, she catches and hides it. Across 48 chapters her composure cracks, until the Furano finale tells her what she was made for.

Ren

A 20-something Tokyoite on his first real trip, Ren is travelling Japan to scatter his grandmother's ashes — one site per prefecture, exactly as her hand-drawn notebook directs. She was the last spirit-walker of her line and raised him until he was ten; he doesn't know that. The small takoyaki charm clipped to his backpack was her last gift and the unspoken trigger that wakes the spirits. By Furano, her grandmother's mantle will be offered to him.

Tako-hime

Takoyaki Spirit · 大阪府

The first prefecture spirit to truly wake in decades. Tako-hime is a palm-sized child of takoyaki — playful Osaka-ben warmth covering a quieter grief at how long her sister-spirits have been silent. She recognises the wooden takoyaki charm on Ren's backpack instantly: it was carved by an old friend, Ren's grandmother. Her waking is the 魂寄せ (Tamayose, Soul-Calling) that the rest of the series will answer, spirit by spirit, prefecture by prefecture.

Roku-no-mai

Sika Deer Messenger Spirit · 奈良県

Nara's deer-messenger spirit, the first to confirm what Tako-hime felt: a spirit-walker line is walking again. Roku-no-mai meets Ren among the sika deer of Nara Park and offers him the first fragment of his grandmother's hidden life — that she walked these paths every summer of her childhood. Ren hears it as a tour story. Compass's holo glitches twice, longer this time, and she logs it as noise.

Inari-yume

Fox-Shrine Lantern Spirit · 京都府

The fox-shrine lantern spirit of Fushimi Inari, and one of the old Kyoto spirits who have been disappointed before. Inari-yume is wary; she tests Ren by leading him on a misdirected path through the torii tunnels at dusk. He follows without complaint, all the way to the mountaintop, and only then does she acknowledge him. Kyoto's spirits don't wake for tourism — they wake for whoever bothers to keep walking.

Shiro-tsubasa

White Heron Castle Spirit · 兵庫県

Himeji's White Heron Castle spirit, and the first martial spirit Ren meets. Shiro-tsubasa takes the form of a samurai-coded heron and never speaks — but bows, low and slow, to the charm on Ren's backpack. The bow itself is the awakening. Compass's holo glitches and the cyan distortion lingers for a full three seconds — her longest yet — and she has no clean way to log it.

Biwa-hime

Lake Biwa Water Spirit · 滋賀県

The water spirit of Lake Biwa. Biwa-hime shows Ren a memory rising off the lake's surface — his grandmother as a young woman dipping her hands into the water at dusk. He doesn't recognise it as a real memory yet; it lands like a dream. Hikonyan flickers past as a chibi cut-in: he's the only mascot who counts as a spirit too, half-icon and half-yokai, the one who exists in both worlds.

Ama-mizuko

Pearl Diver Ama Spirit · 三重県

The pearl-diver spirit of Ise and Toba. Ama-mizuko speaks of pearls as 'spirits the sea returns to us' and gives Ren a small pearl-strung bracelet at Meoto Iwa. The gift is real — and impossible. Compass's sensor log shows no record of him receiving it, no exchange of mass or motion, no transaction. The bracelet is on his wrist anyway, the first object the spirits have placed in the waking world for him to carry.
