History

Northern Tōhoku was settled late by mainland Japan; Iwate's Hiraizumi flowered in the 11th–12th centuries as the seat of the Northern Fujiwara, a quasi-independent court that built the gold-leafed Konjikidō at Chūsonji and was extinguished by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1189.

Through the Edo period the Nanbu and Date clans controlled what is now Iwate, fostering the iron-foundry tradition (Nanbu tekki) and the lacquerware industry that still defines Morioka craft.

Iwate's modern history is shadowed by repeated tsunami — 1896 Meiji-Sanriku (~22,000 killed), 1933, and most recently the 11 March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, whose long Sanriku coastline bore the brunt of the inundation. Reconstruction has reshaped the prefecture toward seawall-protected industrial parks and renewable energy.

Economy & business

Iwate's prefectural GDP is around ¥4.9 trillion (US$33 billion). Once an iron and steel prefecture (the Kamaishi works smelted Japan's first western-style pig iron in 1857), it has rebalanced toward automotive (Toyota Higashi Nihon plant in Kanegasaki), semiconductors (Kioxia's Kitakami fab), forestry, and agriculture/fisheries.

Did you know

The first western-style blast furnace in Japan smelted its first iron at Kamaishi in 1857 — predating the more famous Yawata works in Kyushu by 44 years.
Wanko-soba is served in tiny bowls one after another until the diner physically slams the lid on the bowl; the 'champion' count at Morioka tournaments exceeds 500 bowls.
Kenji Miyazawa — poet of Night on the Galactic Railroad and a half-dozen other Japanese childhood staples — was an unsuccessful agronomist in Hanamaki who self-published most of his work; he died at 37 with very little local recognition.
